THE DAYS OF THE MESSIAH

The days of the Messiah are yearned for not for any material rewards they might bring but for the tranquility that permits untrammeled pursuit of wisdom leading to perfection and immortality. Just as the material blessings promised in the Torah, Maimonides said, strengthen one’s ability to fulfill the law, and thereby to attain immortality, and are not an end in themselves,202

all Israelites, their prophets and their sages longed for the days of king Messiah so they might have relief from the wicked kingdom which does not let them occupy themselves properly with the Torah and the commandments and find tranquility and devote themselves to wisdom so that they are worthy of the world hereafter. . . .203 The ultimate and perfect reward, the final bliss which will suffer neither interruption nor diminution, is the life of the world hereafter. The days of the Messiah are this world, and the world goes it customary way, except that sovereignty will be restored to Israel.204 The ancient sages have said, There is no difference between this world and the messianic age except [the end of] subjection to [alien] powers.205
